How to store matcha so it stays bright green
Light, heat, air, and strong odours are the enemies of good matcha. A few simple habits keep your powder vivid and sweet for weeks after opening.
Matcha is ground tea leaf, which means it oxidizes faster than loose leaf. Once you open a tin, oxygen, humidity, and light begin dulling the colour and flattening the aroma. That is why the best matcha brands ship in small volumes and expect you to finish a tin within a few weeks of opening.
Store unopened tins in a cool cupboard away from the stove, dishwasher, and direct sun. After opening, press the lid on firmly, or transfer the powder to a small airtight container that holds only what you will use in two to three weeks. Less headspace means less air contact.
“Treat opened matcha like fresh herbs: cool, dark, sealed, and used with intention.
”
Never refrigerate an opened tin unless it is truly airtight and you let it return to room temperature before scooping. Condensation introduces moisture that clumps the powder. Freezing is only worth it for sealed backup tins, not daily-use matcha.
